Between Sounds
'Between Sounds' is a walk through Notting Hill, London on two different days. One normal weekday and the day of Notting Hill Carnival, a celebration of Caribbean music and culture and Europe's biggest street party. Since the Carnival started in the 1960s, Notting Hill has changed a lot. It is now one of the most expensive places in London with average house prices at £3million. On the day of the carnival the streets and private gardens of Notting Hill shed this exclusivity and become intensely public, hosting parade trucks, soundsystems and revellers from across London and beyond.
The two sets of recordings, made during and after carnival are edited together here to allow us to hear the flexibility and transience of the city and its spaces.
'Between Sounds' was first broadcast on stress.fm as part of the Osso: Mapping programme in Lisbon 2013
